3 staple makeup looks

by stephanie on February 9, 2011

There are a zillion different ways to wear your makeup.  Why should we get stuck in a rut of wearing it the same way all that time?!

The truth is, just like our outfits, our makeup should change depending on wear we’re going.   We probably shouldn’t be wearing stilettos to Disneyland, just like the smokey eyes aren’t a good look for the beach.  It’s all a matter of what’s appropriate.

We could go through a LONG lost of what makeup look goes with any given event (maybe another day) but for today we’ll stick to three basics…Work, Weekend, Play.

I’ll be using some MAC face charts to help demo each look (http://makeupdiversity.org)

.

WORK

Your look for work should be, in a single word, polished.  It’s not the place to look glam, but it’s definitely a reason to look great.  Look great, feel great, work…great? Work well!

Don’t weigh down your eyes with black shadows, instead use warm neutrals like browns and coppers.  They help brighten up the face while still looking put together.

Bring color into your lips with a berry hue.  Keep cheek color to a minimum with just a few swipes of blush.

WEEKEND

When I think weekend I think time with friends: shopping, brunch, etc.  Your makeup look that will be perfect for any of those activities should be feminine and fresh.

Use pinks and honey hues on the eyes.  Nothing dark.  Apply only a teensy bit of eyeliner but use lots of mascara to still make the eyes pop.

A bit of bronzer and a hint of blush is all you need for the cheeks. Add some highlight across the top of the cheekbones for that dewy fresh look. (not really shown in this chart)

A beautiful coral or light pink shade is perfect for the lips.

PLAY

This is for a fun night out. I believe this is one of the only times where wearing lots of dark eyeshadow can be appropriate.  I guess I’m just more of a fan of less is more.

Just remember that if you’re using lots of color on the eyes, to go neutral on the lips, and vice versa.

Find a fun shade of eyeshadow like teal or navy for the lids only and blend with grey up into the crease.

Go with a nude hue for both your cheeks and lips and you’re ready to hit the town.
